Let’s get right into it!

$10 Million pay packages for AI researchers

The battle for top artificial intelligence talent between OpenAI and Google is intensifying. OpenAI is engaging in a strategic move to triple its valuation to over $80 billion through an employee share sale. In this competitive landscape, OpenAI is actively recruiting senior AI researchers from Google, offering lucrative stock packages based on its current $27 billion valuation, with the anticipation of a significant increase.

“OpenAI recruiters have told some senior Google AI researchers that the value of their annual compensation, mostly in the form of stock, would range from $5 million to around $10 million after the share sale is completed. Those figures assume the new recruits would join before the share sale closes, and also depend on their rank within OpenAI, one of the people said. Google does not appear to be matching the offers, this person said.”

Google to invest in chatbot startup

Google is reportedly in advanced talks to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Character.AI, an artificial intelligence chatbot startup. Founded by former Google employees, Character.AI has gained popularity for its chatbots that allow users to interact with virtual celebrities and anime characters, and the platform offers a subscription model for premium access.

Attracting a significant user base, especially among 18 to 24-year-olds, Character.AI has distinguished itself from other AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard. In just six months since its launch, the company's website has seen a staggering 100 million monthly visits.

Not everyone buying the Humane Pin hype

Priced at $699, the AI Pin lacks a screen and projects output onto the user's palm. Additionally, it requires a $24 monthly T-Mobile subscription for accessing Microsoft and OpenAI's AI models. This pricing and functionality raise doubts about whether this product can replace traditional smartphones, especially as AI technology is already integrating into smartphones rapidly. The company, backed by prominent Apple veterans and $230 million in funding over five years, faces skepticism about this product's potential success in the market.

The AI Pin's design also presents red flags for early adopters. It ships with two "battery boosters," hinting at a short battery life and the need for frequent battery swaps. The collaboration with Tidal for an "AI DJ" feature raises questions about compatibility with other music services like Spotify or Apple Music.

OpenAI still unprofitable

OpenAI is seeking further investment from Microsoft, its chief investor, as it continues its quest to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI). The company's collaboration with Microsoft has been mutually beneficial, with both companies profiting from each other's successes. Additionally, OpenAI introduced new tools and upgrades for developers and companies, including custom versions of ChatGPT and a GPT Store, aiming to create a revenue-sharing model akin to Apple's App Store. Despite good revenue growth, OpenAI remains unprofitable due to high training expenses.

The company is developing GPT-5, the next iteration of its AI model, which will require more data, sourced from both public datasets and proprietary company data. Amidst supply shortages of Nvidia's advanced H100 chips, crucial for AI systems, OpenAI has managed to secure these chips, with expectations of a better supply situation next year.
