Access to Grok rolling out to Premium+ subscribers

Grok, a new ChatGPT competitor developed by Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI, has been launched on X/Twitter for its Premium Plus subscribers in the U.S. This AI chatbot, accessible via X’s web and mobile platforms, is designed to provide conversational answers similar to those of ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

What sets Grok apart is its underlying Grok-1 model, trained on web data up to Q3 2023 and feedback from human assistants. A unique feature of Grok is its ability to integrate real-time data from X posts into its responses, offering potentially more current information than its competitors.

Apple releases mlX, an AI framework for Apple silicon

Apple just launched a new open-source framework in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), reinforcing its commitment to AI development. This move counters the perception that Apple has been lagging in AI due to its focus on machine learning. CEO Tim Cook highlights AI as a "fundamental technology" for the company.

The framework, developed by Apple's Machine Learning team and named MLX, is designed for Apple silicon and is shared with the broader developer community to encourage engagement and enhancement in various AI and ML projects. Announced via Twitter/X by Awni Hannun of Apple's Machine Learning Research group, MLX is described as user-friendly and efficient, specifically tailored for training and deploying models on Apple devices.

Shortage of AI talent in US federal government

AI experts supportive of the White House's executive order on AI have raised concerns about the federal agencies' capacity to meet its ambitious goals, primarily due to a significant shortage of AI talent and overburdened agency leaders. Daniel Ho from the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence emphasized the lack of AI expertise in agencies and the impracticality of expecting existing officers like CIOs or CTOs to effectively assume additional roles as chief AI officers.

The executive order, encompassing various aspects from AI privacy risks to procurement, demands new responsibilities and strategies from several agencies, including recruiting more AI professionals. Despite efforts like an AI jobs portal on AI.gov, there's worry that AI innovations won't be fully utilized in government without more funding to manage AI risks.
