Can ChatGPT Do Your Taxes?
The rise of new consumer AI tools highlights the fact that computers are more intelligent than humans when it comes to raw data. However, when it comes to something like taxes, it's clear that AI is not yet ready to handle the complexity of the task. Although ChatGPT and other consumer AI models can turn data around quickly and offer general answers, they ultimately fall short. When asked about creative deductions for taxes, ChatGPT listed standard options and advised consulting with a tax professional. While AI may be able to process large amounts of data, it still requires human guidance and expertise to navigate complex tax laws and regulations. For now, AI alone is not enough for tax preparation. More about this topic here.
Stability AI Catches Jeff Bezos' Eye?
Stability AI is having financial problems and needs to boost sales. Although they're a big name in the generative AI industry, their well-known product called Stable Diffusion hasn't made enough money to cover the high costs of their servers and expanding workforce. They've already spent a significant portion of the $100 million they raised, which has made some investors hesitant to give them more money. On top of that, some employees are not happy with the CEO's leadership style. He gives too much independence to the researchers, but sometimes takes over their projects. The CEO plans to stay, but he's open to hiring new executives like Sheryl Sandberg to help out. See this article about Stability AI burning through cash and management overhual for more details.
OpenAI is partnering with Microsoft, and Anthropic is partnering with Google, which means Amazon doesn't have a partner for AI development. It makes sense for Stability AI to form a closer partnership with Amazon beyond just using AWS resources. Stability AI CEO, Emad Mostaque, tweeted that he had dinner with Jeff Bezos last week, which could be significant since funding AI research is expensive and having access to Amazon's deep pockets could be helpful. A November 2022 article about AWS and Stability AI can be found here.
Is Amazon Falling Behind On AI?
Amazon, despite having developed voice assistant Alexa and invested in cloud computing and machine learning, has been missing in the AI wars in Silicon Valley. The company's absence in the generative AI landscape has left some speculating that it is lagging. However, Amazon's executives recently assured employees at a cloud computing all-hands meeting that the company is doing a lot in the space and has a lot coming in the future. Although Amazon has partnerships with AI companies, including Stability AI and Hugging Face, and uses machine learning across many of its business divisions, its failure to launch a consumer-facing generative AI has raised concerns. Nevertheless, AWS CEO Adam Selipsky emphasized that there's "a ton happening across all of Amazon" in AI and that the company is working on "really exciting projects and offerings."
Not sure about you but when management has an all hands meeting and says “A” then I would bet that the exact opposite of “A” is true and they are just trying to calm the troops. Not to read too much into it but with Stability AI needing funding, Jeff Bezos having dinner with Stability AI CEO, and Amazon needing an AI partner…a good fit would be to throw additonal AWS resources and funding at Stability AI. See article here and also cached article to bypass Washington Post (ahem owned by Jeff Bezos) paywall.
Stability AI Working on Open Source Text-to-Video
Stable Diffusion has been a game-changer in the world of text-to-image conversion, and now it looks like Stability AI has its sights set on a new challenge - text-to-video. The news was confirmed via a tweet by the company's CEO, Emad Mostaque, and it's safe to say that the anticipation is high. Stable Diffusion has already demonstrated the impressive capabilities of AI-generated images, so the prospect of applying similar technology to video is exciting to say the least. The potential applications for such technology are vast, from creating realistic animations to enhancing video editing processes. It remains to be seen exactly what Stable Diffusion's text-to-video will be capable of, but one thing is for sure - the AI landscape is about to get even more interesting.

Why the 6-month AI Pause Is A Bad Idea

Cool A.I. Tools, News and Demos
The world of AI and machine learning is moving incredibly fast, and it's tough to keep up with all the cool new developments! Here are some of the most exciting AI-powered tools and news.

Midjourney is an amazing text-to-image system, but its quality is dependent on the images used for training. Prompt below resulted in a subpar image, likely because there weren't enough training images available for two actors and Barbie or maybe the prompt could be better.

A.I. Meme of the Day
Ah, tax day in the USA is fast approaching - the day when we all get to sit down and spend hours going through endless receipts and confusing forms, all while trying to avoid a crippling sense of existential dread. Fun, right?
But fear not, my friend! Imagine a world where you don't have to do your own taxes - where you can sit back, relax, and let a ChatGPT take care of everything for you. Sounds like a dream come true, doesn't it? Not yet but maybe someday.
