On July 27, the EU’s AI Omnibus entered into force, rewriting the rollout of Europe’s AI Act. The package pushes requirements for high-risk systems to December 2027 and product-embedded systems to August 2028, while widening access to regulatory sandboxes and simplifying compliance for smaller and mid-sized companies.

The tradeoff is deliberate: Brussels is giving builders more time and room to test, but it is also expanding the AI Office’s oversight of general-purpose models and banning nudification apps. For companies shipping AI in Europe, the practical takeaway is that the deadline moved—not the need for governance, documentation, and transparency.

Microsoft unveiled Project Perception, an agentic security platform that organizes AI systems into red, blue, and green teams. Red agents probe software for exploitable weaknesses, blue agents detect and patch them, and green agents help validate whether the defenses actually work. The platform is paired with MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, a model optimized for fast security workflows.

This is a practical answer to the uncomfortable reality that attackers can automate reconnaissance, exploit development, and targeting. Microsoft’s bet is that defenders need autonomous systems operating at the same speed. For enterprises, the near-term opportunity is continuous testing and remediation; the risk is giving powerful agents enough access to act without creating a new attack surface.

More than 1,100 current and former employees of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Meta, Microsoft, and other frontier labs signed “Pacing the Frontier.” The statement does not call for an immediate halt. Instead, it asks the U.S. government to support an international effort to develop technical and governance tools that could deliberately slow automated frontier-AI development if the risks become unacceptable.

The trigger behind the letter is AI that can materially automate AI research itself. If models begin improving the systems that train their successors, capability gains could arrive faster than existing evaluation and oversight can track. The hard part is coordination: a pacing mechanism only works if major labs and governments trust that competitors will not quietly race ahead.

Nvidia and Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the lab founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, announced a long-term partnership centered on Vera Rubin systems. Nvidia also made an investment, while SSI says the hardware access will increase its compute capacity by an order of magnitude over the next year.

SSI has spent two years in near-total secrecy, promising a single focus: building powerful AI that is robustly aligned. Nvidia says it received rare access to the lab’s research before committing. The deal matters because frontier progress is increasingly constrained by compute—and because Nvidia is using both capital and scarce hardware to shape which labs get to compete at the edge.
