BIG TECH

Gemini CLI for coding agents

Google has released Gemini CLI, an open-source AI agent that brings its Gemini 2.5 Pro model directly to developers’ command lines, enabling natural language-driven coding, content creation, research, and task management. Integrated with Gemini Code Assist and Google Search, and capable of generating images and video via Veo and Imagen, Gemini CLI supports a massive 1 million token context window.

Available now in preview with a free license tied to personal Google accounts, it allows up to 60 requests per minute and 1,000 per day—the highest limit in the industry—potentially positioning it ahead of rivals like Claude, GitHub Copilot, and Microsoft's Windows Terminal AI.

Sam Altman: The Future of OpenAI

At a fireside chat at AI Startup School in San Francisco, Sam Altman reflected on his journey from a tech-obsessed kid to leading OpenAI. He shared insights on building ambitious projects like GPT-4o and the upcoming GPT-5, discussed the vision of multimodal AI and robot scalability, and emphasized the importance of focusing on unmet needs rather than copying existing tools like ChatGPT.

Altman opened up about challenges, including tough feedback from Elon Musk, the burden of responsibility in shaping AGI, and his belief in the power of small teams with conviction. Despite the scale of AI’s impact, he stressed that success still comes down to working with people you enjoy and doing meaningful work.

Build AI-powered apps with Claude

Anthropic is launching a new beta feature in its Claude AI chatbot that lets users build and run AI-powered apps directly within the app. Building on its previous Artifacts feature, this upgrade allows users to describe what they want, and Claude generates the code and displays live results.

Early adopters have created games, writing tools, data apps, and agent workflows. Apps can connect to Claude via API, and Anthropic encourages sharing—others’ use of your app counts against their subscription, not yours. The feature is available on all Claude tiers: Free, Pro, and Max.

What is Perplexity?

Meta and Apple have reportedly explored acquiring Perplexity, a fast-growing AI search startup founded in 2022, as both tech giants race to stay competitive in the evolving AI landscape. While Meta held discussions in April or May that didn’t result in a deal, Apple has internally considered a potential acquisition. Perplexity offers an AI-powered search engine that summarizes results with source links and provides tools like image generation, file-based Q&A, and even a web browser in development.

Its growing capabilities and user base have drawn attention, despite legal challenges over alleged content misuse. With AI expected to transform how people access information, acquiring Perplexity could help Meta bolster its talent pool and AI offerings, while giving Apple a potential alternative to Google Search amid antitrust scrutiny.
