Hollywood Writers Fear An AI Future

Members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) have gone on strike after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed to reach an agreement by May 1. The WGA is arguing for better compensation, improvements in professional standards and protections for writers, and stronger MBA protections, among other demands. The two sides have been unable to come to an agreement on the potential use of artificial intelligence, with the WGA requesting that AI cannot write or rewrite literary material or be used as source material. The AMPTP has rejected this proposal, offering only to hold "annual meetings to discuss advancements in technology." More details here.

Amnesty International Uses AI Generated Images

Amnesty Norway, an arm of Amnesty International, has received criticism for using AI-generated images to draw attention to the two-year anniversary of Colombia's National Strike. The images, including one of a woman being dragged away by police officers, were criticized for being unrealistic and inaccurate. The images got Colombia's flag wrong and invented fake humans in place of real protesters, adding a level of abstraction to real-world horrors. Amnesty International has removed the images from social media, but defended their use as a means to protect protesters from possible state retribution. More details here.

ChatGPT Is Killing Chegg

Chegg is an American online education technology company that provides various services to students, including textbook rentals, homework assistance, and online tutoring. Chegg's main focus is on helping students save money on textbooks, and its platform also offers study tools and resources, as well as access to experts in various fields for personalized assistance. Shares of Chegg fell over 40% after the company stated that the growth of ChatGPT is hurting its business. Linkedin AI Feature Will Send Message To Hiring Manager

LinkedIn is testing an AI-powered personalized writing suggestion tool for its Premium subscribers to help them draft messages to hiring managers. The tool uses generative AI with information from the job seeker's profile, the job description, the hiring manager's profile, and the company of interest to create a highly personalized draft message. The tool is intended to help users get a conversation started and convey their voice. The tool builds on LinkedIn's previous AI-powered writing suggestion tool for its Premium subscribers, which helps users craft engaging Headline and About sections for their profiles.
