Japan Creates Their Own ChatGPT

SoftBank Group is actively engaged in creating a Japanese iteration of ChatGPT through a dedicated team of approximately 100 individuals, led by Junichi Miyakawa, CEO of SoftBank's telecommunications division. The progress of this endeavor is currently on track, with AI training underway and a targeted completion of the Japanese GPT version set for 2024.

To realize this ambitious objective, SoftBank plans to establish an independent subsidiary named SB Intuitions, focused on training generative AI, and has also formed a partnership with Microsoft to expedite the implementation of associated technologies. The company's overarching goal is to furnish reliable generative AI services to Japanese enterprises.

This initiative underscores SoftBank's commitment to propelling AI advancement, a mission inspired by Chairman Masayoshi Son's belief in the swift trajectory of technological evolution. This conviction was symbolically depicted during a shareholder meeting, where Son presented a graph illustrating how AI's development would dramatically hasten the curve of human evolution, ultimately approaching a linear progression.

The introduction of a Japanese GPT model not only amplifies AI capabilities but also empowers Japanese businesses to harness the advantages of generative AI, firmly exemplifying SoftBank's dedication to spearheading AI technology and delivering inventive solutions to the Japanese corporate landscape.

OpenAI Launches GPTBot

AI systems rely on abundant data for training, often sourced freely from the web, leading to concerns about copyright infringement and privacy violations.

The bot aims to address these issues by allowing website administrators to include instructions in a "robots.txt" file to restrict crawling. OpenAI emphasizes that GPTBot could potentially refine future models, is programmed to avoid paywalled or sensitive content, and could contribute to AI accuracy and capabilities.

Majority Can Detect Deepfake Speech

The study, conducted in English and Mandarin, found that participants correctly identified deepfake speech only 73% of the time. While English speakers noticed breathing patterns, Mandarin speakers focused on cadence and fluency.

The researchers suggest that current machine-learning detectors perform similarly to participants and advocate for developing more advanced detectors due to the likelihood of improved deepfake technology. This study echoes previous findings of overconfidence in identifying deepfake content and highlights the potential risks of AI-generated content, including posthumous audio and video impersonations.

Nvidia 🤝 HuggingFace

This collaboration introduces a new service, "Training Cluster as a Service” — designed to streamline the development of custom generative AI models for enterprises.

Powered by Nvidia's DGX Cloud, the cloud-based AI supercomputer, the service provides access to eight Nvidia H100 or A100 GPUs, along with 640GB of GPU memory, Nvidia's AI Enterprise software, and expert consultations. While companies can independently subscribe to DGX Cloud, the integrated Training Cluster as a Service combines Hugging Face's repository of over 250,000 models and 50,000 datasets, offering a beneficial starting point for AI projects.

Hugging Face's CEO, Clément Delangue, emphasizes the potential of this partnership in advancing generative AI tools and enabling companies to leverage Nvidia's advanced supercomputing capabilities. This collaboration aligns with Nvidia's cloud services expansion strategy, which includes recent initiatives like AI Foundations. Hugging Face's exponential growth, attracting over 15,000 organizations to its platform, further underscores the significance of this alliance.

A.I. Will Not Replace Doctors

The integration of artificial intelligence into healthcare is more likely to enhance clinical productivity rather than replace clinicians. However, primary care physicians (PCPs) face challenges in fully harnessing AI's potential, as current proposals for AI-driven primary care improvements do not address the time constraints faced by overworked PCPs.

The key lies in AI-enhanced electronic health records (EHRs) that streamline tasks, such as identifying medication-related issues, reconciling prescriptions, and mining historical data. Transitioning to AI-powered EHRs requires redesigning cluttered interfaces, adopting modular EHR approaches, and reevaluating certification standards.
