OpenAI’s Losses Doubled to $540 Million In 2022

Large AI language models are incredibly expensive to develop, and recently, The Information reported that OpenAI spent $540 million on losses while developing ChatGPT. Although OpenAI's revenue is set to hit hundreds of millions per year, they are looking to raise up to $100 billion in the next few years to develop even smarter AI that can improve itself. Overall, while OpenAI has been successful in attracting top talent from companies such as Apple and Google, the cost of their operations remains a significant challenge. It will be interesting to see how they continue to innovate while managing their expenses in the future. More info in paywalled article here.

DeepMind CEO Says AGI Possible in a Few Years

The CEO of Google DeepMind, Demis Hassabis, said that artificial general intelligence (AGI), which is a system where computers can have human-level cognitive abilities, could be achieved in a few years. Hassabis mentioned that AI research has progressed rapidly in recent years and that there is no reason why it would slow down. He thinks that very capable and general systems could be developed within a decade.

The development of AGI is a hot topic in the AI research community. While some people believe that it's a science-fiction concept, Hassabis and other executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, openly stated their ambitions to develop the technology while safeguarding humanity from the consequences.

AI Powered Bing and Edge Coming Soon

Microsoft has announced the next generation of its Bing search engine and Edge browser. The waitlist for Bing has been removed, and now billions of people all over the world can access the advanced AI GPT-4 for free in their own language. Additionally, the platform capabilities of Bing will be opened up so that developers and third parties can build on top of it to help people take actions on their queries and complete tasks. The new Bing is designed to make search more accessible, visual, and productive, and it will be available to everyone without the need for a waitlist.

We’ll soon build third-party plug-ins into the Bing chat experience creating a platform for developers. For example, if you’re researching the latest restaurant for dinner in Bing chat, it will leverage OpenTable to help you find and book a reservation. Or, with Wolfram|Alpha, you can create powerful visualizations and get answers to complex science, math and human-curated data-based questions directly from Bing chat.

Unicorn Replit Open Sources Code Completion Language Model

Replit recently, announced that they are releasing their advanced code, LLM (replit-code-v1-3b), to the open-source community. Trained on 525B tokens of code, replit-code-v1-3b is a 2.7B parameter model that knows 20 languages, has very low latency, and performs +40% better than comparable models. The smaller model will have lower latency for a better user experience and powers Replit’s Ghostwriter tool used by developers to help write code. For more information, please listen to podcast and Replit blog post on how to train your own LLM.
