OpenAI softens its ban on military use

OpenAI recently removed language from its usage policy that explicitly prohibited the use of its technology for military purposes, including weapons development and military and warfare activities. This change was part of a broader rewrite aimed at clarity and readability, as explained by OpenAI spokesperson Niko Felix.

The new policy still prohibits using OpenAI's services to harm others, with specific mention of developing or using weapons, but it no longer contains the clear ban on military and warfare applications.

Impact of AI on journalism

At a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee hearing, media executives and academic experts expressed concerns about the impact of AI on journalism, emphasizing how tech giants like Meta, Google, and OpenAI use journalistic work to train AI models without compensation, leading to a decline in local news and a rise in AI-generated misinformation. The hearing highlighted intellectual property issues, with examples such as the New York Times suing OpenAI over copyright infringement.

Despite partnerships between AI developers and some news agencies, many in the media industry, including Condé Nast's CEO, are calling for congressional intervention to ensure fair compensation for content used by AI models. However, some argue that current copyright laws should be sufficient to address these issues.

GPT store open for business

OpenAI's GPT Store, a platform for sharing custom chatbots, has been launched, enabling users to share and access a variety of ChatGPT-based bots. Since the announcement of the GPT Builder program in November, over 3 million bots have been created. Initially planned for November, the store's launch was delayed until January.

It is currently accessible to subscribers of OpenAI's paid tiers, who can create and share their own GPTs. OpenAI also plans to introduce a revenue sharing program for GPT creators based on user engagement. To maintain quality and safety, a new review system has been established for the store.

1X robotic startup backed by OpenAI

Norwegian robotics startup 1X Technologies, initially known as Halodi Robotics, has raised $100 million in a Series B funding round led by EQT Ventures with participation from Samsung NEXT, Nistad group, and others. This investment, which includes backing from OpenAI, will support the development and market introduction of 1X's new bipedal android, NEO, designed for labor-intensive tasks.

Their existing wheeled robot, Eve, has already been implemented in various industrial tasks. With this funding, 1X plans to expand its enterprise customer support and further develop its data collection and training strategy for embodied AI, positioning itself amidst other major players in the rapidly growing AI robotics market.
