IBM to Pause Hiring For Jobs That AI Could Do

IBM plans to pause hiring for non-customer-facing roles, such as human resources, that it believes could be replaced by AI and automation over the next five years, according to CEO Arvind Krishna. These roles amount to roughly 26,000 workers, with around 30% of those roles set to be replaced, resulting in roughly 7,800 jobs being lost. The move marks one of the largest workforce strategies announced in response to the advancement of AI. More details here.

AI Super Tutor for Students and Teachers

Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, believes that AI can revolutionize education by providing every student with an artificially intelligent personal tutor and every teacher with an artificially intelligent teaching assistant. He cites Benjamin Bloom's 1984 2 sigma study, which showed that personal 1-to-1 tutoring for students could turn an average student into an exceptional one and a below-average student into an above-average one. Khan Academy has developed an AI-powered tutor called Khanmigo that can help students with math, coding, reading comprehension, writing skills, and even act as a guidance counselor, academic coach, career coach, and life coach. Real Doctors vs. Chatbots

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in virtual healthcare, resulting in a 1.6-fold increase in electronic patient messages. However, this increase in messaging volume has led to increased burnout for clinicians. Researchers tested the ability of ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, to provide high-quality and empathetic responses to patients' healthcare questions by comparing its responses to those of physicians on a public social media forum. The study found that health care professional evaluators preferred chatbot-generated responses over physician responses in a public online forum, with chatbot responses being longer and rated significantly higher for quality and empathy. Stability AI Releases DeepFloyd IF

Stability AI and DeepFloyd have created a text-to-image model, called DeepFloyd IF, that is capable of generating photorealistic images and integrating readable text into them. The model is based on Imagen, a text-to-image diffusion model developed by Google Research that combines transformer language models with high-fidelity diffusion models to produce highly realistic images (fancy way of saying combing ChatGPT conversation interface with Stable Diffusion). However, Imagen has been found to encode social biases and stereotypes, including a bias towards generating images of people with lighter skin tones and conforming to Western gender stereotypes. “Godfather of AI” Quits Google To Warn About AI

Geoffrey Hinton, “Godfather of AI”, and a former part-time employee of Google, has quit the company to focus on warning the world about the potential threat of AI, which he now believes is coming sooner than previously thought. Hinton has expressed concerns over the near-term risks of AI taking jobs and the proliferation of fake photos, videos, and text that appear real to the average person. He also expressed regret over his life's work and cited the differences between digital intelligences and biological intelligences. Box Announces Box AI

Box has unveiled its new offering called Box AI, a set of capabilities that integrate advanced AI models into the Content Cloud. This move towards AI was not unexpected, given Box's competitor Dropbox’s recent focus on AI and layoffs. More details here and click here to sign up.
