Let’s get right into it!

U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) looking to hire AI pros

Margaret Palmieri, Deputy Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer, has revealed initiatives aimed at attracting individuals passionate about data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) to contribute their skills to the US Department of Defense (DOD). Palmieri outlined steps during the National Defense Industrial Association's conference, including adding approximately 10 new work roles within DOD's cyber workforce framework, designed to align critical skill sets with data and AI functions in the department. This move is expected to make such opportunities more visible and accessible, both to current employees and external candidates.

Palmieri emphasized that creating defined career paths and networks for AI professionals within the DOD is vital, offering a route for individuals to enter government service, learn from industry and academia, and potentially return to government roles with updated expertise. The strategy aims to tap into emerging technologies, providing decision-making advantages for DOD leaders and service members, while enhancing the department's capacity to harness AI capabilities.

Google Meet’s new AI will take notes for you

Google is introducing new AI-powered features to its video conferencing platform, Google Meet. One major addition is the capability for Google's Duet AI to take real-time meeting notes, generating summaries and action items as the meeting progresses. Latecomers can catch up with a mid-meeting summary, and private discussions with a Google chatbot can help address missed details. Once the meeting ends, users can save the summary, which may include video clips, to Google Docs for later reference. Another upcoming feature lets Duet "attend" a meeting on a user's behalf, generating discussion points if someone is unable to participate.

Microsoft and Zoom have also adopted AI for meeting summaries. Google's features will be tested through Google Workspace Labs in the coming months. Google is also addressing the visual aspect of video conferencing, introducing dynamic layouts that adjust tile sizes and shapes based on the number of attendees.

Amazon’s best seller list filled with fake AI generated books

People flooded Amazon's bestseller list for young adult romance books with fake books created by AI. These AI-generated books didn't make sense and were likely used to trick the system for profit. Amazon seems to have removed most of them from the list, but they're still available to buy.

An author named Caitlyn Lynch noticed this and posted about it on Twitter. She showed that many books on the bestseller list were nonsense created by AI, not real books. Even though these fake books aren't on the bestseller list anymore, you can still find and read them on Amazon's site.

This situation could affect real authors who use the Kindle Unlimited system to earn money. If AI-generated books become popular, real authors might earn less because of how the payment system works.

AI beats multiple human drone racing champions

The drone flying autonomously with AI (blue) managed the fastest lap, half a second ahead of the best time of a human pilot.

Swift employs visual-inertial odometry (Vio) for accurate position and orientation estimation, complemented by a learning-based detection system for gate segmentation, enabling triangulation and precise navigation.

Using only an onboard computer, a single camera and an inertial sensor Swift surpassed three human drone league champions in drone racing, displaying consistent trajectories, tighter turns, and achieving the fastest recorded race time, marking a historic achievement in real-world competitive sport.
