Every Major AI Feature Announced at Google I/O 2023

These announcements demonstrate Google's efforts to enhance its AI capabilities, catch up with competitors, and provide advanced AI solutions across various domains.

PaLM 2: Google unveiled an advanced language learning model, PaLM 2, which surpasses its predecessor in capabilities and versatility. It supports over 100 languages and excels in coding, writing, and mathematics.

Bard Upgrade: Google upgraded its chatbot, Bard, to make it smarter and more capable. It now has improved coding abilities, supports multiple languages, and offers new features like image, table, and map responses. Extensions from external partners are also planned.

Search with Generative AI: Google introduced Search with generative AI, providing concise and informative answers to search queries. It integrates AI-powered snapshots and helps users with shopping decisions. These features will be available through Search Labs.

AI Upgrades to Workspace: Google implemented generative AI features in its productivity tools like Gmail, Google Docs, and Slides. Users can benefit from AI-powered auto-replies, data organization, and AI-generated images. Google Maps and Photos also received AI enhancements.

Android Personalization with AI: Android introduced personalization features enabled by generative AI, including Magic Compose for messaging, customizable lock screen elements, emoji wallpapers, and 3D cinematic wallpapers.

Duet AI for Google Cloud: Google unveiled Duet AI, a development interface powered by AI. It offers code and chat assistance for developers on Google Cloud, providing code completion, error identification, and chat-based support. No-Code AppSheet enables app development without coding skills.

Gemini: Gemini is a large language model created by Google DeepMind, comparable to OpenAI's GPT-4. It is still in early stages and aims to be used similarly to PaLM 2.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to Testify Before Congress

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to testify before Congress at a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing on Tuesday May 16, 2023. The hearing will focus on examining the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) as lawmakers seek to scrutinize the field more closely. This will be the first time Altman faces questioning from lawmakers since OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, gained widespread attention last year. The success of ChatGPT has spurred increased investment in AI, leading policymakers to call for regulations and safeguards to prevent potential misuse. Other individuals testifying at the hearing include Christina Montgomery, IBM's Vice President and Chief Privacy and Trust Officer, and Gary Marcus, a former NYU professor known for his critical stance on AI hype. Senator Richard Blumenthal, the chair of the Senate panel on privacy and technology, emphasized the need for rules and safeguards to address both the potential of AI and its pitfalls. The hearing marks the beginning of the subcommittee's work in overseeing and shedding light on the advanced algorithms and powerful technology of AI.

Burger Chain Wendy’s To Use AI for Drive Through Ordering

Wendy's and Google Cloud have partnered to pilot an artificial intelligence (AI) solution called Wendy's FreshAI, aimed at transforming the drive-thru ordering experience. With the majority of Wendy's customers choosing the drive-thru option, delivering a seamless ordering process can be challenging due to menu complexities and customization options. Google Cloud's generative AI technology will automate the drive-thru experience, aiming to improve order accuracy and speed. Wendy's plans to launch the pilot in a Columbus, OH-area restaurant, using generative AI to understand orders, respond to questions, and provide a faster and frictionless experience. The partnership expands on the existing collaboration between Wendy's and Google Cloud, where Wendy's has utilized data analytics, AI, and machine learning tools to enhance customer access to the brand.

Do Language Models Have Values?

Anthropic developed a new method called "Constitutional AI" to train an AI assistant without relying on human feedback like OpenAI does. They use a two-phase process: supervised learning and reinforcement learning. In supervised learning, they start with an initial model and generate self-critiques and revisions. The model is adjusted based on these revisions. In reinforcement learning, they compare samples from the adjusted model and use another model to evaluate their quality. They train a preference model based on AI preferences and use it as a reward signal. This approach creates an AI assistant that is harmless, respects privacy, and can handle objections to harmful queries. By using chain-of-thought reasoning, both supervised and reinforcement learning methods improve AI decision-making transparency and performance. Overall, this methodology allows for better control over AI behavior while minimizing the need for human labels.
